Motherhood

Motherhood

a note from Rachel

Since I had my daughter in 2020, capturing motherhood has been my passion. Every aspect between expecting mothers and their bare belly bumps, to newborn sessions with tired moms and dads who are figuring it all out, to foster moms capturing their new season, breastfeeding sessions to celebrate milestones,  first birthdays, and extended family sessions with generations of grandparents. It’s all so special to me! Motherhood is for rockstars, it’s just a privilege to try and capture it. It’s an investment your children and your children’s children will value forever as they have photos to remember you.

Extended families

When the whole family is finally together, for either a vacation at Lake Michigan, or finally everyone’s schedules worked out, extended family sessions come with combinations of each smaller family, grandparents with grandkids, cousins, etc. and come back with up to 75 photos delivered in an online gallery. These sessions can range anywhere from 45 minutes to 90 minutes depending on the family size, and take place at one location.

FAQ

I pick the exact location based off of your vision and preference. You tell me if you prefer beach, woodsy, urban, or field and I will then tell us the exact park for photos, based off what I’ve shot at previously with success. I live in Byron Center, and shoot anywhere between Grand Rapids to Holland.

For a summer or fall date, aim for 3-5 months in advance. For winter availability, aim for 1-3 months in advance. Of course, I try to make exceptions for those with special circumstances, so never hesitate to ask if I can squeeze you in. I’ll do my very best!

Early morning sessions within 2 hours after sunrise can be an option, but for any evening sessions I stick to only shooting within 2 hours of sunset. In the Summer months that usually looks like at least 7:30 pm. The reason is for the glowy light that is so prevalent in my favorite photos. I just can’t guarantee that look any earlier, and don’t want to sacrifice the quality of your photos for it. If your kids are not flexible on bedtime, then a fall session might be better for your family because it gets dark earlier.

An in home session is perfect for a laid back lifestyle look if you have adequate lighting. Lighter walls and paint colors photograph best. If you’d like a more classic, simple studio session, come to the studio. It has warm wood floors, and dreamy light coming in that make for perfect photos. Both are great options, but both definitely come with a different look in photos.

I schedule newborn sessions by putting your due date in my calendar, and then I’ll anticipate an email around then that your baby was born and we’ll pick a week day the following week so they are between 6-12 days old.

First scroll through my instagram for inspo, so you can see what outfits turned out best and what catches your eye. I edit photos warmer with darker shadows, and the outfits play a big part in that. Darker yellows, burnt oranges, tans, browns, and other neutral shades photograph best. Men are always dressed best in a white button down or simple light t and khakis. Feel free to send me some photos of your outfit plans, and i’ll give my advice!

My client closet is growing each month, with new additions of dresses that I know will photograph perfectly. They fit small-large, with most being size medium that are flowey with move to stretch. I have purchased these to take out some of the thinking for moms, and i’d love for you to use them so your photos are more cohesive with my aesthetic and editing scheme too. Please ask me, and i’ll send over some options.
